State and local governments provide the vast majority of funding for K-12 education — 87 percent of all school funding. State governments rely on formulas that distribute education funds among school districts. Those school districts use state dollars and additional revenue raised from federal and local sources to fund individual schools.During recent economic downturns, federal spending has also helped supplement diminished school funding from state and local sources. The federal government provides support for K-12 education through specific grant programs administered by the states to school districts. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government sent an additional $190 billion to states and school districts in emergency funding for K-12 education. That investment is nearly triple the amount the federal government spent on K-12 education in the previous school year and increased the share of education revenue received from federal sources. This spending was intended to assist schools in responding to the pandemic while maintaining academic progress. Federal spending on K-12 education is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels in subsequent years.

Despite the executive branch’s limited authority to dictate K-12 education policy, the Trump administration is working to reshape the federal role in education through executive action. To date, most of the administration’s efforts aim to undermine longstanding local, state, and national efforts to improve public schools and promote equity, accessibility, and inclusion in public education.Litigation has been a key strategy to limit executive overreach in education policy—and to some early successes. Danya Laverack (left), a school counselor at Indian River Academy, hugs students on the first day of school, Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, in Vero Beach.Since January 2025, the Trump administration has actively worked to reshape the federal role in K-12 education. This includes executive orders directing the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education (ED), threatening to withhold federal funding from schools that support DEI (or DEIA) or recognize transgender students’ rights, and calling for the return to so-called “common-sense” school discipline policies.Given the limited role of the federal government in education, many of these actions exceed the executive’s authority to dictate state and local K-12 school policy. As a result, several of them have been challenged in federal courts.

'K-Drama School' is an in-depth examination of Korean pop culture - International Examiner

Grace Jung is a force of nature: ... writer Kim Tongin); standup comedian; actor (“The Joe Schmo Show”); YouTube personality; podcast host (“K-Drama School”); Fulbright Scholar in Korea; PhD; and university lecturer.... Grace Jung is a force of nature: a fiction writer (The Moon Hangs Like a Stupid Mistake and Deli Ideology); literature translator (Sweet Potato, stories by early-modern Korean fiction writer Kim Tongin); standup comedian; actor (“The Joe Schmo Show”); YouTube personality; podcast host (“K-Drama School”); Fulbright Scholar in Korea; PhD; and university lecturer.K-Drama School is likewise many things: 15 lessons that educate us on various facets of contemporary South Korean society, each contextualized by one or more popular Korean television shows; an autobiographical account of how the author was sustained in large part by Korean TV dramas during a challenging adolescence as the daughter of undocumented immigrants; a critique of academia drawn from Grace’s recent experience in a Ph.D.The triumph of K-Drama School comes at the end, in Lesson 15, “My Liberation Notes and How It Feels to Be Free.” Earlier, in Lesson 3, “Realism and Trauma Recovery in My Mister,” Jung establishes the foundation for personal liberation by noting that “My Mister” “is a slice-of-life realist text about how a person reconnects with their inner humanity after experiencing a disconnection due to trauma.”Very few books about Korea combine subject expertise, context both in and outside of Korea, and life lessons in wellness based on personal experience. Let’s hope that K-Drama School will inspire similar volumes that examine Korean film, Korean popular music, and perhaps even the most venerable component of the Korean cultural tradition—literature, both oral and recorded.

5 reasons US K–12 education is shifting from standardised to personalised, and why the trend is here to stay - The Times of India

US K–12 education is undergoing a major transformation, shifting from standardised to personalised models. Since 2020, trends like homeschooling and microschooling have expanded rapidly, supported by flexible work arrangements, new technologies, and school choice policies. Education entrepreneurs and AI innovations are enabling customisation, with parents increasingly opting out of traditional schools. According to The74, this shift marks a lasting change in American education. Five key trends reshaping US K–12 education after the Covid pandemic. This rise contradicts the assumption that the pandemic-related increase in homeschooling was temporary.Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, alternative education options such as microschools were relatively limited. The74 reported that a microschool attended by the children of author and education researcher Kerry McDonald was “one of only a sprinkling of schooling alternatives” in the area. However, post-2020, a wide and expanding network of learning centres emerged both locally and nationally. The shift includes an increasing number of parents opting out of traditional schools from the start of their child’s education. According to McDonald’s research, as cited by The74, many kindergarten classes at new microschools are enrolling students whose parents chose unconventional education methods from the beginning, rather than reacting to negative experiences in public schools.Work flexibility influencing school flexibilityThe growing adoption of flexible work arrangements in the US has contributed to shifting expectations around education.Disillusioned by the standardisation of the charter sector, Pannell relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, in 2023 to launch Trinity Arch Preparatory School for Boys, a microschool accessible through Arizona’s universal school choice policies. While some school founders operate independently of government support, many are intentionally building networks in regions where school choice legislation enables broader access for families.New technologies and AI reshaping learningTechnological advancements, including the emergence of artificial intelligence, are playing a key role in the shift toward personalised learning.
