Dr. K getting into Harvard Medical School with less than 2.0 GPA

Main Post:

Dr. K talks about graduating from Harvard Medical School, yet also says he had an undergraduate GPA of less than 2.0. How is it possible to get admitted into Harvard with less than 2.0 undergraduate GPA?

Do K-Pop Idols ACTUALLY go to school?

Main Post:

So I know a lot of the 4th gen idols go to actual high schools (e.g Jake from enhypen goes to an international school, a lot of other idols go to Hanlim or SOPA) but I’ve always heard that they don’t spend that much time at school anyways..? So how do they catch up with classes and studies? Do they even go to school five days a week? How do they graduate when they miss so many classes and don’t study as much as other kids?

Not sure how the Korean education system works, but do you have to do just decent enough to graduate? Sometimes I wonder why they even bother going to a public school when they can just do homeschooling. Can someone educate me on this please? 😭

Top Comment: Afaik they attend enough to meet attendance requirements, get credit for some classes for idol activities if they’re at a performance arts school, study on their own and go to school to take exams (pre-Covid). Most of them are probably C students and do enough just to pass. There is a lot of time to study and do homework during waiting room hours too. Don’t know about other idols but college wise, Donghyun, Woojin, and Daehwi from AB6IX are enrolled in Global Cyber University (not sure about Woong). Online classes are more flexible, but if they’re a busy idol then they’ll probably do just enough to pass. Woong from AB6IX has also recently been bellyaching the past 2 weeks about his upcoming Japanese language exam because he wants to get the language certification, but he’s also pretty sure he’s going to fail it. Doesn’t hurt to try though. He did have a good 18 hours hanging around in a waiting room yesterday (before their hidden tracks concert appearance) to study though. 18 hours is plenty of time to cram for an exam to pass. A lot of people with busy lives make education work though if they want it bad enough. I know people in a college program who not only have to handle raising kids but a day job too. The “C’s get degrees” is probably a common positive mindset among idols who decide to pursue completion of their education even if they can’t commit to it fully.

Anki in U.K. Medical School

Main Post:

Hi! Not sure how many members here are from the U.K, but obviously for us there are no pre-made decks (as far as I’m aware) and the structure of our course is different to those abroad.

I’m currently first year, been using Anki all through sixth form and GCSEs, but already 7 weeks into term I’ve got over 3000 cards. Also on the days I do manage to get my Anki reviews done, I end up adding more cards than I have reviewed, so it feels like I’m getting nowhere.

I was wondering, does anyone have any tips for bashing out a bunch of cards quicker? Or maybe there are some settings changes I can make that will help me? Essentially I’m just trying to see how other people have managed. If you’re not from the U.K. your experience with review-load management and other tips/tricks would be just as appreciated!

Thank you guys ❤️❤️

Get a controller, the software Joytokey, make the keybinds correspond to again, good, easy, bury, suspend, mark/flag and finally, undo. Don't forget undo. You'll get through cards a lot faster this way if you haven't done this already (sorry, I'm assuming that you don't already use a controller just to cover all bases). Other add ons like bigger buttons and the add on that tells you what you just pressed are also helpful. For preclinical, don't use Zanki. It's in too much depth and there's too much US stuff. Use Dope - 1, as it's based on the Australian system, and is more similar to ours. Ignore all of histology and pharmacology, make the pharma cards yourself: just names, classes, actions and most well known side effects. No need to do full drug dissections. Just briefly learn the histology your university teaches.

The mistake I made in years 1 and 2 was unsuspending every card that was remotely related to the key word I was searching for; I know that specifications can be vague but go through your lecture slides, identify key words and only unsuspend those. Ignore everything else as they can only test you on whatever they cover in lecture content, bar a few random questions that you shouldn't be worried about because they use those for bell curve purposes.

Other than that, 3000 cards sounds about right for 7 weeks in, I'm at 4000 and I'm also 7 weeks into third year (clinical now). Anki can seem a lot but keep up with it, and don't stop doing them after the semester is over (what I did) because it all becomes relevant again in clinical years lol.

Anki should not be your primary learning tool as a UK student. Didn't work for me. I would pick 3-4 resources and stick to those; I use Zero to Finals podcasts/simplified notes, Boards and Beyond lectures as a final pass after looking through my university lecture content (ooh boy is it a lot better in clinical. No more 6 hours of lectures a week, they add up to 1.5 hours max).

Edit: I didn't do any question banks for years 1-2, but Passmed has a medical students years 1-3 free bank and the questions there are good, I would say.

Recommend me some high school K-Dramas!

Main Post:

Hi! I’m looking for K-Dramas similar to Weak Hero Class. I feel like watching something related to the lives of teenagers in high schools, colleges, etc.—something a bit dramatic and, why not, with romance or everyday life themes mixed in.

I really enjoyed Twinkling Watermelon, as well as Duty After School and All Of Us Are Dead. Although the last two are a bit more supernatural, with zombies and lots of action, I still loved them. Anything along the lines of these kinds of K-Dramas would probably appeal to me, but I’ve run out of options or don’t know any others. I’ve also watched Night Has Come and Pyramid Game.

Here are my trakt.tv lists where you can see a watch history of all the K-Dramas I've already watched since 2023. They are split in three, one per year (yes, I'm so new to this wave!).

Thanks in advance!

School Shooting at Covenant School Nashville K-6

Main Post:

SS: Just now: School Shooting at Covenant School Nashville K-6. Close eye on wether the shooter was encouraged by the Alphabets. TN is a very solid 2nd Amendment state, thus a target.

If we banned everything because a single parent objected there’d be no curriculum left. I had a parent object to teaching her kid algebra because she n ver used it and didn’t want her kid to have to work so hard for nothing. Fuck these people.

Confused about Junior Kindergarten and the school system in NL?

Main Post:

Is jr kindergarden not part of the school system in NL? In Ontario, jr kindergarden is already in the school system.

Top Comment: As someone who grew up here, I have no idea what junior kindergarten is. Is that different from preschool? Kindergarten starts at age 5 in the public education system.

I teach high school… or is it pre-K?

Main Post:

I thought I taught high school. I was pretty sure the kids I teach are 15-18 years old. Today made me rethink my assumptions.

My second class left a variety of “gifts” for me today.

  1. Red squiggles drawn on my classroom wall.
  2. Questionable liquid in the seats of three desks. Maybe soap?
  3. The once transparent classroom hand sanitizer is now blue

I have no clue how this all happened in less than 95 minutes. Students took a test, and I supervised, of course. But somehow, they still managed to act like toddlers and make a mess of my classroom.

And I don’t even know how to punish this kind of behavior. This class has been a handful since July. I’ve contacted parents. I’ve written office referrals. I’m so overwhelmed at this point... any tips? I’m so close to becoming a very petty person.
